Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for hydrogen- chloride (7647010), chromic-acid (13530682), trichloroethylene (79016), xylene (1330207), methylethylketone (78933), and 1,1,1- trichloroethane (71556) at Johnson Controls, Incorporated (SIC- 3822), Watertown, Wisconsin in August 1983. The evaluation was requested because of union concern of possible exposure to chemicals used at the facility. Medical questionnaires were administered to 13 employees in the assembly department. The ventilation systems were inspected. Two breathing zone samples obtained in the metal treating room contained 6.1 and 24.9 parts per million (ppm) trichloroethylene. Area samples contained 0.1 to 0.6ppm. The OSHA standard for trichloroethylene is 100ppm. Traces of trichloroethylene were found on the roof of the air makeup unit for the assembly department. Exposures of the other substances were well below relevant standards. Symptoms of eye, nose, throat, and sinus irritation were reported. The metal treating room was found to be under negative pressure. The authors conclude that a health hazard does not exist at the facility. Employee symptoms are due to exhaust emissions entering the facility through makeup units on the roof. Recommendations include raising the exhaust stacks to prevent emissions entering the facility and discontinuing the use of trichloroethylene, a suspected carcinogen.
