Description:Environmental samples were analyzed for xylene (1330207) at Davis and Geck, Incorporated (SIC-3842), Danbury, Connecticut, in January 1984. The evaluation was requested by the International Chemical Workers Union due to a high incidence of hysterectomies in the Specialties Department where xylene and ethylene-oxide (75218) were used. Concern was also expressed for exposure to trichloroethylene (79016) and 1,1,1-trichloroethane (71556). Sampling for ethylene- oxide was not done as NIOSH was concurrently conducting an industrywide study that included this facility. Medical questionnaires were administered to 76 female employees. Eight-hour exposures to xylene ranged from less than 1 to 4.43 parts per million (ppm). One sample collected for 2 hours in the silastic coating area contained 105.7ppm xylene. The OSHA 8-hour standard for xylene is 100ppm. Ten females underwent hysterectomies while employed in the Specialties Department. Based on age specific rates determined in 1982 for upper New York, 9.98 hysterectomies would be expected. The authors conclude that an excess of hysterectomies has not occurred among females working in the Specialties Department of the facility. They note that trichloroethylene and 1,1,1- trichloroethane are not known to have gynecologic or reproductive effects in humans. No recommendations are given.
