Description:A health hazard evaluation was conducted at Dawson Auto Transmission (SIC-7539), Gilmore City, Iowa in January, 1985. The evaluation was requested by an official of Iowa State University due to a case of arsenic (7440382) poisoning in one of the employees thought to have been occupationally related. The evaluation was conducted by the Iowa State Department of Health. Environmental samples were analyzed for arsenic. Urine samples were obtained from four employees and analyzed for arsenic. Wipe samples, the acid aluminum cleaner fluid, and samples from the hot water wash tank showed trace or low arsenic concentrations, ranging from less than 0.0002 to 0.28 part per million. Arsenic was not detected in any air or urine samples. The OSHA standard for inorganic arsenic is 10 micrograms per cubic meter. The symptoms of the patient with arsenic poisoning did not appear to be related to any particular periodic events in the workplace and continued after he was replaced. The authors conclude that conditions in the workshop would not be expected to cause arsenic poisoning. They recommend removing the existing material in the hot water wash and replacing it with clean solvent.
