Description:Short term breathing zone samples were analyzed for organic solvents at Impressions Handprinters (SIC-7333), Chicago, Illinois, May and June, 1984. The survey was requested by the president because of the occurrence of headaches among employees while working with solvents used in producing custom silkscreen printed vinyl wall coverings. Toluene (108883) concentrations of 144 to 727 parts per million (ppm) and 24 to 143ppm methyl-isobutyl-ketone (108101) were measured in the screen washing booth. The OSHA standard for toluene is 300ppm. The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists standard for methyl-isobutyl-ketone is 75ppm. Samples obtained during screen printing contained 4 to 28ppm cyclohexanone (108941) and toluene concentrations of 29.4 and 80.4ppm. The OSHA standard for cyclohexanone is 50ppm. Isophorone (78591) a solvent contained in the retarder was not detected. The author concludes that a hazard from short term exposures to toluene and methyl- isobutyl-ketone, cyclohexanone, and isophorone could exist. Recommendations include substituting less toxic substances where feasible, applying engineering control methods to the screen washing booth, and using respiratory protection during screen washing.
