Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for trichloroethylene (79016), perchloroethylene (127184), and methylchloroform (71556) at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft (SIC-3722), West Palm Beach, Florida, December 1981 and March, 1982. The survey was requested to evaluate employee exposure to chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents due to reported findings of elevated blood chloroform (67663) concentrations and an increased prevalence of cancer in the workforce. Occupational health questionnaires were administered to 30 employees. The blood test and cancer data were reviewed. Urine samples were collected from the employees and analyzed for total trichloro compounds (TTC). Proportionate cancer mortality ratios were computed. All chlorinated solvent concentrations were well below their OSHA standards. Blood chloroform concentrations were evaluated, indicating a low background exposure to chlorinated solvents. All urine samples had elevated TTC concentrations, 0.5 to 83.4 milligrams per gram (mg/g), the normal concentration being 2mg/g. Twenty to 30 percent of the subjects reported occasional symptoms such as lightheadedness, headaches, and eye irritation. No statistically significant excess cancer mortality was found. The authors conclude that employees may be potentially overexposed to chlorinated solvents. There is no work-related excess cancer risk. Recommendations include properly maintaining the degreasers and improving work practices during the degreaser operation.
