Description:Area air samples were analyzed for formaldehyde (50000) at DMG Incorporated (SIC-2541), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in July/August, 1984. The survey was requested by an employee representative to evaluate the health complaints experienced by employees originating from formaldehyde present in the particle board used at the facility. An unspecified number of employees were interviewed regarding their health complaints. Formaldehyde concentrations in the samples ranged from 0.07 to 0.33 part per million (ppm). The OSHA standard for formaldehyde is 3ppm. Two employees complained of nosebleeds. Other complaints included eye and throat irritation. The complaints began after the particleboard stock was relocated to it present location in which there were no windows. Only floor air movement fans were used for the comfort of the employees. The author concludes that although the OSHA standard was not exceeded, the observed formaldehyde concentrations could affect susceptible individuals. He recommends that the stock of particleboard be relocated. Until such time as the stock is relocated, the work area should be exhaust ventilated. The particleboard should be stored in an area that has general air or local exhaust ventilation.
