Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for N- nitrosomorpholine (59892) and other nitrosamines at Kelly Springfield Tire Company (SIC-3011), Cumberland, Maryland in July, October, and December, 1979, and January, 1980. The local union requested the evaluation because N-nitrosodiphenylamine (86306) (NDPhA), a retarding agent used during tire manufacture, had been shown to be carcinogenic. Mortality records of all employees who died between 1968 and 1980 were reviewed. The ventilation system was inspected. N-nitrosomorpholine and N-nitrosodimethylamine (62759) were found at concentrations of 1.4 to 248 and 0.05 to 4.1 micrograms per cubic meter (microg/m3), respectively. There are no federal standards for airborne nitrosamines. After the company made NIOSH recommended ventilation improvements and removed NDPhA from the rubber batch mixes, mean N-nitrosomorpholine concentrations decreased to 1 to 2microg/m3. Computed proportionate mortality ratios indicated an excess incidence of mortality from arteriosclerotic heart disease and hematopoietic cancer of other lymph tissues. The authors conclude that a health hazard due to a high N-nitrosomorpholine exposures existed at the facility. The excess hematopoietic and arteriosclerotic heart disease mortality could be work related, but a chance occurrence is possible. Recommendations include ventilation system monitoring and analysis of the causes of mortality among former employees.
