Description:Worker exposures to methylene-bisphenyl-isocyanate (101688) (MDI), 4,4'-methylenedianiline (101779) (MDA), dimethylethylamine (124403) (DME), and methylene-chloride (75092) (MC) were investigated in March and June 1983 at Midwest Foundry (SIC-3321), Coldwater, Michigan. Evaluation was requested by the International Molders and Allied Workers Union, Local 118, on behalf of workers involved in the No Bake Process in the core room of the foundry. Personal and area air samples were collected, and 10 employees completed health symptom questionnaires. No MDI was detected, and the highest MDA concentration measured was 0.08 micrograms per cubic meter (microg/m3). The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists standard for MDA is 800microg/m3. DME concentrations ranged from 1 to 45.9 milligrams (mg)/m3
no exposure standard exists for this chemical. MC concentrations ranged up to 2.5mg/m3, compared to the NIOSH standard of 261mg/m3. None of the workers reported consistent health symptoms associated with work, but several reported momentary sensations of breathlessness or choking when working around storage drums in the No Bake area
the workers held their breath during the process. The authors conclude that no health hazards exist at this facility. They recommend good personal hygiene and work practices, labeling of chemical containers, and worker education concerning chemical exposure symptoms.
