Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for toluene- diisocyanate (26471625) (TDI), cellosolve (110805), cellosolve- acetate (111159), xylenes, and methylene-chloride (75092) at Penn Emblem Company (SIC-3999), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in April and August 1983. Evaluation was requested by Local 837 of the Teamsters Union expressing concern about exposure of press operators and ink blenders to solvents. TDI concentrations were below the detection limit. Concentrations of cellosolve ranged from 3.84 to 19.4 parts per million (ppm). Cellosolve-acetate concentrations were 2.05 to 15.2ppm. Mixed xylenes were found at 1.22 to 12.9ppm. Methylene- chloride concentrations were 8 to 483ppm
the NIOSH recommended standard is 75ppm. Other solvent concentrations were below OSHA standards. Ten of the 15 cellosolve and 6 of the 15 cellosolve- acetate samples were higher than the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) standards of 5ppm. The author concludes that there were no excessive exposures to cellosolve, cellosolve-acetate or xylenes
however, using ACGIH or NIOSH criteria, cellosolve-acetate, cellosolve, and methylene- chloride exposure limits were exceeded. Recommendations include replacement of the solvent currently used with less toxic solvents, installation of adequate ventilation in the ink mixing room, and proper maintenance of the respirators.
