Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for mercury (7439976) (Hg) at a dental office (SIC-8021) in Englewood, Colorado in July and October 1983. The evaluation was requested by the dentist to evaluate potential health hazards due to Hg exposure. Work practices and techniques were observed. Concentrations of airborne Hg in breathing zone samples ranged from 0.008 to 0.012 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3). The OSHA and NIOSH standards are 0.1 and 0.05mg/m3, respectively. All environmental samples, except those taken in the sterilization room, had concentrations below the NIOSH standard. Hg concentrations in the sterilization room ranged from 0.02 to 1.0mg/m3. The author concludes that personnel in the dental office are not overexposed to Hg. Recommendations include improved cleaning and maintenance on and around equipment in the sterilization room, prompt cleanup of Hg spills by vacuuming, thorough inspection of the area after cleanup to confirm complete removal of Hg and confining the use of Hg to specified areas. A health hazard evaluation for potential exposure to nitrous oxide (10024972) is also recommended.
