Description:Exposures to chlordane (12789036) were investigated in September, 1983 at the Ozark National Scenic Riverways (SIC-2879), National Park Service In Van Buren, Missouri. The evaluation was requested by an unspecified individual on behalf of employees living in 58 residential buildings that had been sprayed for termites with chlordane. Residents reported strong and consistent odors since the spraying. Air samples were collected in six representative buildings, and in one building that had been treated twice
bulk soil and wood chip samples as well as swipe samples were also taken. Chlordane concentrations ranged from 0.35 to 27 micrograms per cubic meter (microg/m3) in air samples
no comparative OSHA standard was provided. Bulk samples contained 920 to 1800microg/m3 chlordane, while swipe samples contained 0.13 to 7.3microg/m3. The author concludes that a potential hazard due to chlordane exposure exists for residents of the sprayed buildings. The building that had been sprayed twice should be vacated and left empty until chlordane concentrations reach 5microg/m3 or less. Personal protective equipment is recommended for both primary and secondary site decontamination operations, and additional sampling of all sprayed buildings is suggested. Chlordane should not be used for termite control, and monitoring should accompany any future pesticide applications.
