Description:A health hazard evaluation was conducted at Keystone Color Works, Incorporated (SIC-2865), York, Pennsylvania in September and December 1982. The evaluation was requested by the facility manager. All 13 employees were interviewed concerning their medical, occupational, and chemical exposure histories. The production process and employee work practices were observed. Urine samples were obtained for benzidine (92875) and aromatic amines analysis, biochemical and microscopic examination, and cytology. No detectable concentrations of benzidine or aromatic amines were found at the end of a normal workday. One of eight employees in the production area, who had extensive exposure to the dyes, was diagnosed as having bladder cancer. Besides the cancer case, two other employees had worked at the facility long enough to have a sufficient latency period for bladder cancer to develop following exposure to the dyes. The authors conclude that a health hazard exists due to exposure to carcinogenic dyes at the facility. Recommendations include annual screening for bladder cancer, instruction of workers in the proper handling of carcinogens, and the use and correct maintenance of approved respirators where engineering controls cannot prevent exposure.
