Description:

Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for formaldehyde (50000) in the newly constructed small mammal building of the National Zoological Park Conservation Center (SIC-8421), Front Royal, Virginia, on April 20, 1983. The evaluation was requested by the manager to evaluate formaldehyde exposures in the building. Formaldehyde was outgassing from the truss rafter that had been accidentally treated with an exterior fire retardant process. Repeated treatment of the rafter with ammonia (7664417) had reduced the formaldehyde concentrations significantly. The building had been closed 17 days prior to sampling to measure worst case conditions. Airborne formaldehyde concentrations ranged from 0.11 to 0.43 parts per million (ppm) and averaged 0.26ppm. The OSHA standard for formaldehyde exposure is 3ppm time weighted average and 5ppm maximum for any 30 minute period. The author concludes that under normal operating conditions, the formaldehyde exposures in the small mammal building should present very little hazard and would be in compliance with current NIOSH guidelines that exposures be maintained at the lowest feasible concentration.
