Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for asbestos (1332214) at the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Safety building (SIC-9621), Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on November 15, 1983. The evaluation was requested by the personnel director and an employee representative because of concern about asbestos exposure to clerical and administrative personnel. A previous evaluation had shown that the fireproofing material in the ceiling contained 12 percent asbestos. Subsequently, water leaks had occurred in certain areas, possibly causing deterioration of the material. All air samples showed no detectable concentrations of asbestos
the detection limit was 0.01 fibers per cubic centimeter (cc). The OSHA standard for asbestos exposure is 2.0 fibers/cc. Analysis of two bulk samples showed the presence of approximately 35 percent chrysotile (12001295) asbestos. The author concludes that there was no exposure to asbestos at the time of the survey. Recommendations include encapsulation, enclosure, or removal of exposed asbestos containing material, periodic monitoring for potential asbestos exposure, and medical surveillance of all employees with potential or previous exposure.
