Description:Worker complaints of back strains and general discomfort were investigated on June 8 and July 14, 1983 at Pelton and Crane Company (SIC-3843) in Charlotte, North Carolina. The evaluation was requested by a company representative on behalf of 15 polishing department workers concerned about poor ergonomic working conditions. Management and operating personnel were interviewed, working conditions and techniques were observed, the materials being handled were examined, and airborne particulates were measured. Handling of two heavy items exceeded the NIOSH acceptable limits for manual lifting, especially since handling was required frequently and for long periods of time. Thermal stress was evident by heavy sweating of the operators. Work chairs were not selected to fit the job and were not structured to provide support or comfort. Noise levels were not high enough to be hazardous, but were continuous and added to workplace stress. Particulate concentrations ranged from 1.12 to 6.4 milligrams per cubic meter. The authors conclude that operations and conditions at the facility are contributing to worker stress. They recommend the use of a jig or an overhead crane to hold the heavier objects during finishing operations, reduction of thermal stress, provision of more suitable work chairs, accommodation of varying operator body sizes at the different work machines, and use of cushioning mats on the concrete floor.
