Description:

Worker exposures to formaldehyde (50000) were investigated on June 14 to 16, 1983 at Champion Paper Technology Center (SIC-0262) in Hamilton, Ohio. The evaluation was requested by the employees after the building had been fumigated with formaldehyde gas to eradicate histoplasmin from the ventilation system. Air samples were analyzed for formaldehyde and wipe samples were analyzed for paraformaldehyde (30525894). The air samples contained up to 3.9 parts per million (ppm) formaldehyde, compared to the OSHA 8 hour time weighted average limit of 3ppm, and a 30 minute ceiling limit of 30ppm. Paraformaldehyde concentrations in the wipe samples ranged from about 50 to 5600 micrograms per 100 square centimeters. The main contamination sites appeared to be associated with spillage of paraformaldehyde when the fumigation equipment had been set up. The author concludes that the workers had a short term exposure to formaldehyde that could cause irritative symptoms, but no persistent health hazard from formaldehyde exists.
