Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for formaldehyde (50000) and other organic solvents at the District Council Offices (SIC-8111), New York, New York in 1982. Evaluation was requested by management and employees because of concern about eye irritation, fatigue, dermatitis, and menstrual disorders experienced by workers on one floor of the building which had undergone renovation. A health questionnaire was administered to 104 workers on that floor and 117 unexposed employees on other floors. No formaldehyde or excessive exposure to organic solvents were found. Small concentrations of perchloroethylene (127184), trichloroethylene (79016), and methyl-chloroform (71556) were found. More than half of all workers reported uncomfortable environmental conditions, cold, stuffy air, and too little air movement. A significantly higher number of workers on the affected floor reported poorer health in the past year and menstrual problems. The authors conclude that no overexposure to hazardous chemicals has occurred. Possible outgassing of organic solvents from new furnishings on the affected floor is responsible for the symptoms and increased employee discomfort. They recommend that when renovations are planned, the employees should be relocated and not return until sufficient time has elapsed for complete ventilation.
