Description:Area air samples were analyzed for carbon-dioxide (124389) and carbon-monoxide (630080) at the Hawaii News Agency (SIC-5199) building, Honolulu, Hawaii in October 1984. The survey was requested by an agency representative because of the continuing incidence of colds, flu, and sore throats among employees of the newspaper. Questionnaires were administered to employees and the ventilation system was inspected. Carbon-dioxide and carbon- monoxide concentrations were well below their relevant standards, although carbon-dioxide concentrations were slightly above those of normal outdoor air. Employees felt that the air in the building was stuffy. Analysis of the questionnaire results showed that employees at the agency were more likely to have a history of allergy and upper respiratory complaints than employees of another agency located on the other side of the building. The return air registries did not appear to be exhausting sufficient volumes of air. The author concludes that the ventilation system on one side of the building is providing less than optimal air circulation. Employee symptoms might abate with improved air circulation. Recommendations include evaluating the ventilation system further and having the existing system properly serviced.
