Description:Environmental samples were analyzed for asbestos (1332214) at General Electric (SIC-3724), Evendale, Ohio in January and July 1983. The evaluation was requested confidentially because of concern about electricians who had worked in the heat treatment process building and were thought to have suffered adverse effects from exposure to an asbestos containing insulation material. Eleven current and former employees were interviewed. Autopsy reports and postmortem lung tissue from two deceased electricians who had worked in the heat treatment process were examined. Only one material sample contained asbestos, 20 to 25 percent chrysotile (12001295). Both deceased electricians had diseases associated with asbestos exposure, asbestosis in both and colon cancer in one. Lung tissue samples contained 23 and 15.5 million asbestos fibers per gram (g). Non occupationally exposed lung tissue normally contained 140,000 fibers/g asbestos. The interviews showed that asbestos exposures occurred at the facility, probably between 1957 and 1975. The authors conclude that a health hazard due to asbestos exposure existed in the past but does not now exist. Recommendations include determining who has been exposed to asbestos, developing an asbestos screening program, and instituting an educational program for asbestos exposed employees.
