Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for organic solvent vapors, formaldehyde (50000), hydrogen-sulfide (7783064), sulfur-dioxide (7446095), and carbon-monoxide (630080) at Carey Plastics (SIC-3079), Carey, Ohio in December, 1984. The survey was requested by management and the union local to investigate an outbreak of illness in the workforce. Medical interviews were conducted with 45 employees who had become ill. Local hospital records were reviewed. All solvent concentrations were below their relevant standards. All formaldehyde, hydrogen-sulfide, and sulfur- dioxide concentrations were below the limits of detection. Carbon- monoxide concentrations ranged from 10 to 200 parts per million. The highest concentrations occurred in towing motor exhaust. Illness was not localized to a specific site within the facility. The most frequently reported symptoms included headache, mucous membrane irritation, nausea, chest tightness, and fatigue. Hospital records showed no serious pathology associated with the illness outbreak. Several workers treated at the hospital had elevated blood carboxyhemoglobin concentrations. The authors conclude that the illness outbreak was due to a combination of factors, rather than to a single substance. Recommendations include not idling towing motors unnecessarily, installing local exhaust ventilation, and operating the mold at the proper temperature.
