Description:A health hazard evaluation of Encinitas Floral Company (SIC-0721), Encinitas, California was conducted in June and July, 1984. The confidential evaluation was requested because of concern about possible exposures to Temik (116063) and other pesticides used at the company's two sites, Sanford and Saxony. Medical interviews were conducted with an unspecified number of employees. Work practices were observed. Patch testing for chrysanthemum sensitization was conducted on 40 workers at the Saxony site. Deficient work practices were observed. These centered primarily on lack of understanding about proper use and care of personal protective equipment. Neither site had a formal respirator program and many of the respirators were found to be defective. Skin irritation associated with certain plants was reported at both sites. Eye irritation was also reported by workers at the Sanford site. A major complaint was the escape of Temik vapors from recently sprayed greenhouses into adjacent areas. Only two workers gave positive patch tests for chrysanthemum sensitization. The authors conclude that a health hazard exists at both sites. Recommendations include establishing a formal respirator program in accordance with OSHA requirements, wearing personal protective clothing and equipment, and improving the exhaust ventilation systems.
