Description:Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for lead (7439921), chromium (7440473), nickel (7440020), and arsenic (7440382) at the CF & I Steel Company (SIC-3321), Pueblo, Colorado in June 1985. The evaluation was requested by local 2102 of the United Steel Workers of America because of possible lead exposures in the furnace area of the facility. Work practices were observed. Company medical monitoring records were reviewed. All chromium, nickel, and arsenic concentrations were below the limits of detection. Breathing zone lead concentrations ranged from 0.03 to is 0.05mg/m3. General air lead concentrations ranged from non-detectable to 0.03mg/m3. All workers in areas with potential lead exposure were wearing respiratory protection. The respirator program complied with OSHA requirements. Employee blood lead concentrations according to company records were below 40 micrograms per 100 milliliters. The author concludes that there is a health hazard from exposure to lead. Recommendations include utilizing work and hygienic practices to minimize lead exposure, showering and changing clothes after each work shift, and continuing monitoring workers for lead exposure.
