Description:A walk-through survey on November 27, 1984, and personal exposure monitoring for kerosene (8008206), mineral-spirits (8030306) a proprietary coolant additive (fatty acid), asbestos (1332214), and carbon-monoxide (630080) on May 20 to 22, 1985 were carried out in the Rolling Mill Department of the National Aluminum Rolling Division (SIC-3353), Salisbury, North Carolina. Authorized representatives of Local 8573, United Steel Workers of America had requested an evaluation of reports of respiratory illness in workers in the department. There were approximately 52 workers in the Rolling Mill Department, including rolling mill operators and helpers, and annealing furnace operators and helpers. NIOSH investigators did not identify any specific source of respiratory irritation in the Rolling Mill Department. Time weighted average (TWA) exposures to kerosene ranged from 16 to 101 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3)
the NIOSH recommended exposure limit (REL) is 100mg/m3. Exposures to mineral spirits ranged from 16 to 43mg/m3. The NIOSH TWA REL for mineral spirits is 350mg/m3. Monitoring for the proprietary additive did not indicate any detectable exposures. Evaluation criteria applicable to the additive were not found. Asbestos exposures for furnace workers ranged from non-detectable to asbestos is 0.1 fibers/cc. Full shift exposures to CO were below 5 parts per million (ppm). The NIOSH TWA REL for CO is 35ppm over a workshift. The author considers the potential for asbestos exposure associated with deteriorating furnace insulation to necessitate implementation of corrective measures.
