Description:Health hazard evaluations were undertaken at the Metal Container Corporation (SIC-3411), Columbus, Ohio in the Automatic Banding Area (HETA 84-379) and the Printer Oven Area (HETA 84-495), in response to employee complaints about smoke, fumes, and chemical exposure. Six air samples collected near the printer and drying ovens showed formaldehyde (50000) concentrations of 0.05 to 0.17 milligrams per cubic meter of air (mg/m3). The current OSHA standard for formaldehyde is 3.7 mg/m3. Ovens are the major potential source of volatile organic compound emissions. Two were leaking smoke during the study. Printer/oven employees reported mucous membrane symptoms as the most prevalent symptom. Prevalence of all symptoms was highest among operators and lowest among maintainers, with the exception of skin problems, which were highest among adjusters. Automatic bander employees also reported a higher prevalence of symptoms of mucous membrane irritation, as well as noting the emissions from the ovens. The authors conclude that a potential health hazard from formaldehyde and volatile organic compound exposure existed. The authors recommend the installation of portable hoods, additional ovens, and a canopy hood at the DESPATCH ovens
periodic monitoring of air flow in the stack
and use of smoke tubes to determine whether the oven is under negative pressure.
