Description:School board members requested a health hazard evaluation at the Mid Valley School District Secondary Center (SIC-8211), Throop, Pennsylvania to explore possible exposure to formaldehyde (50000) among employees and 700 students in the building. Sources of formaldehyde included foam insulation, acoustical ceiling insulation, carpeting, and pressed wood products. A problem with the ventilation system caused restricted amounts of fresh air to be supplied to some classrooms. After system modification, five classrooms with the highest concentrations of formaldehyde were resampled. Depending on the weather, formaldehyde levels in the art room ranged from 0.04 to 0.09 parts per million (ppm), comparable to that found in conventional homes less than 5 years old. Classrooms with south facing outer walls had formaldehyde levels from 0.03 to Formaldehyde levels throughout the rest of the school ranged up to concludes that there was no hazard due to exposure to formaldehyde. It is recommended that the ventilation system be maintained and operated as it had originally been designed; assuming a class size of 25, this will ensure a minimum rate of 10 cubic feet per minute of fresh air per person.
