Description:Due to reports of employee symptoms of headaches, irritation of the nose, throat and respiratory tract, and muscular weakness, possible chemical exposures during the manufacturing and packaging of various institutional and janitorial maintenance chemicals and allied products at the Purex Industrial Division Facility (SIC-2842, SIC- 2841, SIC-2851, SIC-2869, SIC-2819), Marion, Ohio were evaluated. Long term personal breathing zone air samples revealed: acetone (67641), 104 milligrams/cubic meter (mg/m3) to 939 mg/m3
ammonia (7664417), not detectable to 68.8 mg/m3
ethanolamine (141435), 1.5 mg/m3
methylene-chloride (75092), 171 to 561 mg/m3
sodium- hydroxide (1310732), 0.4 to 1.3 mg/m3
and styrene (100425), 6.0 to 66.9 mg/m3. No detectable airborne concentrations of butyl- cellosolve (111762), formaldehyde (50000), or morpholine (110918) were found. The author concludes that during the survey, employees were overexposed to ammonia and methylene-chloride. Medical interviews indicate that some workers may be experiencing symptoms related to exposure to organic solvents and other materials. Improved engineering control of workplace contaminants is recommended. Audible and visual warning systems should indicate when tubs are overfilled or spillage occurs. Calcium-gluconate gel should be stored as an effective first aid measure for liquid hydrofluoric-acid splashes. Beards should be prohibited. Employees should be trained in the potential health problems.
