Description:An evaluation of eye strain resulting from microscope work was requested by a representative of Local 2221 of the American Federation of Government Employees at the Aerospace Guidance and Metrology Center (SIC-7699) (AGMC), Newark Air Force Station, Newark, Ohio. A symptom survey was conducted among the 646 workers involved in maintenance of aerospace guidance devices. Symptoms included musculoskeletal problems, cervical and lumbar strain, stiffness, pain, and nerve compression. Eye examinations were performed on workers experiencing both high and low degrees of symptoms. The high symptom group included a greater proportion of women, and they spent more time using acetone (67641) and using the microscope than did members of the low symptom group. The illumination produced by the microscope light sources was well within the levels recommended as safe by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. Area illumination was generally adequate. In most cases workers bent forward flexing the neck and back to use the microscopes. The authors conclude that there was not a health hazard due to microscope use at this facility. There was evidence of eye irritation and musculoskeletal discomfort associated with prolonged microscope use. It is suggested that work be placed on a slant stand that would elevate the work and rotate it toward the worker.
