Description:The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 817 requested a study be made to determine the potential exposure of workers at the Engine House associated with the AMTRAK New York Maintenance Facilities (SIC-4011), Long Island City, New York to polychlorinated-biphenyls (1336363) (PCBs). Full shift breathing zone and environmental air samples were collected. Monitoring of air quality was performed at work locations for a number of employees near and in the drop table pit area, the inboard inspection area, and at other work sites. All findings showed that any of the seven aroclors which may have been present were at less than detectable levels. Surface PCB contamination was determined in wipe samples as well taken from areas visibly contaminated with a viscous, oily residue. While the vast majority of the wipe samples gave no cause for concern, a relatively high PCB level of 252 micrograms/square meter was found in a visibly dirty area. The author concludes that there appears to be no hazard associated with the airborne PCBs within or near the AMTRACK Engine House. It is recommended that further efforts be made to clean up the drop table pit and the access pit for specific tracks. Until such cleanup is completed, workers entering these contaminated areas should dress in disposable outer clothing, impervious to PCBs.
