Description:A request was made by a representative of AMF Head Division (SIC- 3949) of Boulder, Colorado for an evaluation to be made of possible employee exposure to methylene-bisphenyl-isocyanate (101688) (BDI), methylene-chloride (75092), 1,1,1-trichloroethane (71556), naphtha (8030306), sodium-hydroxide (1310732), methyl-ethyl-ketone (78933) (MEK) and methyl-isobutyl-ketone (141797) (MIBK). Various sports rackets were manufactured at this facility. Areas specifically evaluated for chemical exposure included spray paint and finishing, mold release, degreasing, refill, fill/sand, and stripping departments. Noise exposure was also monitored. The author concluded that noise exposure was excessive for employees working in racket stripping, refill and fill/sand refinishing areas. No dangerous exposure levels were found for the chemicals under study with the exception of methylene-chloride which may be a health hazard for employees directly involved with its use due to its carcinogenicity. It is recommended that employees exposed to 1,1,1- trichloroethane and sodium-hydroxide wear proper clothing to prevent direct contact or splashing onto the skin. At the time of the study the facility did not have an OSHA Hazard Communication Standard program established
it is recommended that one be designed and implemented as soon as possible.
