Description:Management personnel of Grundy Industries Inc., (SIC-2952) located in Denver, Colorado requested an investigation of their facility with regard to possible asbestos (1332214) exposure. At this facility a roofing compound was manufactured, composed of approximately 1.3 pounds of asbestos to each gallon of asphalt (8052424). Four employees worked at the site. Four breathing zone and two general room air samples for asbestos gave results which were all below the NIOSH recommended level of 0.1 fibers/cubic centimeter (cc). Due to the strong odor of asphalt, polynuclear aromatics were determined in general room air samples. Concentrations were at or below the limit of detection. The author concludes that a health hazard did not exist at this facility at the time of the study from either asbestos fibers or asphalt fumes. It is recommended that asbestos be replaced with a less toxic substance. While working with asbestos, stringent workplace practices should be enforced to control possible exposures. The practice of wearing disposable head coverings and coveralls should be continued. During nonroutine operations the respirators which are provided should be worn. Employees with facial hair may find the respirator not fitting tightly and they should not work in areas where respiratory protection is required.
