Description:Service Employees International Union requested an investigation at the Bendix Cheshire Corporation (SIC-3811) located in Cheshire, Connecticut regarding possible employee exposure to solvents, specifically Freon (75456) and 1,1,1-trichloroethane (71556). Gas and electric gyros were manufactured on the premises by 537 workers in three shifts. The process occurs in several steps with frequent degreasing steps and cleaning steps. Concentrations of Freon-113 (76131) ranged from 0.75 to 10.0 parts per million (ppm) and concentrations of 1,1,1-trichloroethane from 8.9 to 32.3ppm. Exposure criteria for these substances are 1000ppm and 350ppm, respectively. There were some areas where ventilation was inadequate such as in the grinding room and the bellows room. Symptoms reported included skin irritations, fatigue, eye and throat irritation, sinus congestion, and headaches. The authors conclude that the symptoms are consistent with effects of general indoor air quality problems, resulting from inadequate ventilation. There were also symptoms strongly suggestive of solvent vapor exposure. It was recommended that the ventilation system be balanced to insure adequate distribution of fresh air. Local exhaust ventilation in the bellows room and grinding room should be added to capture solvent vapors at the source.
