Description:An evaluation of exposures to n-hexane (110543) in the lapping room at Industrial Precision, Inc. (SIC-3599), in Westfield, Massachusetts was carried out in response to a request from company officials. In 1983, n-hexane was used in the lapping room; sensorimotor neuropathy which developed in four workers was thought to be associated with exposure to this solvent. The solvent Lacolene was then substituted in an effort to eliminate exposure to n-hexane. A bulk sample of Lacolene contained primarily five to eight carbon aliphatic hydrocarbons with only a small amount of n- hexane present. Personal and area air samples contained approximately 1 part per million (ppm) n-hexane, well below the NIOSH recommended exposure limit (REL) of 100ppm. Total alkanes registered routinely above the action level of 200mg/m3 but below 350 mg/m3, the NIOSH REL. The author concludes that a health hazard for exposure to solvents did not exist at the time of the evaluation. The author recommends that the use of solvents not containing n-hexane be continued and that impervious gloves be worn when immersing parts in the solvent. Medical surveillance is recommended for employees exposed to total alkanes above the action level of 200mg/m3.
