Description:An evaluation of serious illnesses and deaths, especially due to cardiovascular disease, was made of workers in a building of the Aircraft Engine Division (SIC-3724) of a General Electric facility, in response to a request from Local 201 of the International Union of Electronic, Electrical, Technical, Salaried and Machine Workers. The union reported 52 workers as having significant medical problems. Thirty-three deceased workers were identified as having worked a minimum of one month in the building in question, and proportionate mortality ratios (PMR) for this group were determined. Material safety data sheets were reviewed to determine the use of cardiotoxic substances in the building. The only substance of concern was 1,1,1-trichloroethane (71556), which was used only minimally. PMRs for five cause of death categories were not significantly different from those of the U.S. population or those of 1357 deceased General Electric workers from the entire Aircraft Engine Group. Cardiovascular PMRs were 137 and 114 compared to the general population and the internal comparison group, respectively. The authors conclude that there appeared to be no statistically significant risk of cardiovascular mortality among workers in the building in question. Two study limitations are pointed out: small study population, and only deaths during active employment or after retirement with continuation of life insurance are considered.
