Description:In response to a request from the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers, and Allied Workers, an investigation was made of exposures of roofers at Trocal single ply system roofing sites (SIC- 1761) in Chicago, Illinois. Instantaneous and longer term personal air samples were collected at three sites, and analysis included gas and ion chromatography, mass spectrometry, flame ionization, and photoionization. Liquid bulk samples were also analyzed. Medical surveys (12 roofers) and neurobehavioral testing (three roofers) were administered. Airborne levels of tetrahydrofuran (109999) were 1.08 to 189 parts per million (ppm), below the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists' short term limit of 250ppm. No chlorine gas (7782505) and only traces of carbon-monoxide (630080) were detected in personal samples. Two samples showed hydrogen-chloride (7647010), at 3.7 and 0.68ppm, below the OSHA ceiling of 5ppm. Bulk samples showed tetrahydrofuran, toluene (108883), and methylene-chloride (75092) as major constituents
the latter is a cancer risk. Symptoms of eye irritation, tiredness, and respiratory irritation were reported by a substantial fraction of workers. No effect of an 8 hour shift on neurobehavioral tests was found. The authors conclude that a health hazard does not exist under the conditions studied. Recommendations include information and training on chemical hazards, availability of respirators, securing of ladders, and work practices aimed at minimizing exposure.
