Description:In response to a request from the Glass, Pottery, Plastics and Allied Workers Union Local 101, a health hazard study was performed at the Owens-Illinois glass bottle factory (SIC-3221), Hapeville, Georgia concerning possible exposure of workers to methylene- chloride (75092) (MC) and carbon-monoxide (630080) (CO). Environmental MC was sampled by drawing 0.035 liters of air per minute through two charcoal tubes connected in series. No CO exposures of 9 parts per million (ppm) or above were measured during the two shifts sampled. Significant amounts of CO were given off from lift truck traffic resulting in readings from 20 to 80ppm at various areas within the warehouse. MC levels ranged from none to 9ppm. Airborne concentrations appeared to be well controlled by local exhaust ventilation, with most exposures in the 0.2 to 4ppm range. No significant differences were noted in responses to medical questionnaires for exposed and unexposed workers. The authors conclude that although exposure levels were below existing Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards of 500ppm for MC and 50ppm for CO, exposures to MC should be reduced to the lowest feasible level due to its carcinogenic potential. Recommendations included the issuing of respirators to employees requesting them, proper use of fans, skin protection to prevent drying, education of the employees to the hazards, and removing some of the CO emissions from the lift trucks.
