Description:An evaluation of potential organotin exposure in workers at Design Drywall Specialties, Inc. (SIC-1742), Denver, Colorado, engaged in drywall finishing was conducted at the request of a company representative. An unusually large amount of preservative material had been added to a batch of joint compound by the manufacturer. Four workers using the compound had severe headaches, nausea, skin irritation, and respiratory problems. After 5 months, three workers remained unable to return to work due to severe headaches and fatigue. Other symptoms included forgetfulness, irritability, and sleep difficulties. Analysis of filter and charcoal tube air samples collected in the house about 1 month after exposure detected no organotin compounds above the 0.2 microgram (microg) detection limit. Bulk samples of contaminated joint compound were compared with samples of normal compound. The contaminated compound contained organotin at 1800microg per gram (g) and total tin (7440315) at 2100microg/g, while the normal compound contained organotin at 11microg/g and total tin at less than the detection limit. Samples of joint compound from one house showed a relatively high level of organotin compounds. The authors conclude that one or more constituents of the joint compound may have been related to symptoms in exposed workers. The authors recommend detailed analysis of the compound, determination of other worker exposures to the compound, recall of the batch, and stricter manufacturing controls.
