Description:An evaluation of exposures to halothane (151677) and isoflurane (26675467) in the operating rooms at Primary Childrens Medical Center (SIC-8070), Salt Lake City, Utah, was conducted in response to a request from management. Operating rooms and the recovery room were evaluated, and 15 halothane, isoflurane, and ethrane (13838169) breathing zone samples were collected from scrub nurses, circulating nurses, and recovery room nurses. No samples were found to contain ethrane, which had not been used in the operating rooms in over 3 years, and no samples for isoflurane were above the evaluation criteria of 0.5 parts per million (ppm). Halothane concentrations ranged from 0.23 to 1.9ppm, with nine of 15 samples above the evaluation criteria of 0.5ppm. The authors conclude that a health hazard from exposure to halothane exists in the operating rooms. Because of the procedures used for anesthetic administration for children and infants, it would be difficult to reduce the levels of anesthetic gases except by increasing ventilation. The authors recommend that four of the five operating rooms have ventilation increased to provide 20 air changes per hour to reduce the levels of anesthetic gases; air monitoring should be continued.
