Description:In response to a request from the manager of the Snap-On Tools Corporation (SIC-7699, SIC-7629), in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, an evaluation was made of potential occupational exposure of tool repair technicians to Safety-Kleen-105-Solvent-MS. The solvent was composed of mineral-spirits (8030306), dye and an antistatic agent. Personal breathing zone samples and long-term air samples were collected. Personal exposure levels ranged from 20 to 95mg/m3. Most of the area air samples were even lower. The highest levels of mineral-spirits were located in the pneumatic tool repair room, but there was little likelihood that any employee would suffer from overexposure as no one person spends a sufficient enough time in this location. There was an initial odor, and a residual taste experienced by those exposed to this location of the facility. No measurable airborne calcium was detected and no chromium in any form was detected. The author concludes that no hazardous exposure levels were identified at this facility. The author recommends measures to reduce the exposure levels that did exist. Two modifications are given for the ventilation hoods in the pneumatic area
resulting air velocities should be measured and flow adjustments made to insure that the minimum standards are met. Employees who experience symptoms of exposure to mineral-spirits should try wearing gloves when involved in parts cleaning operations to determine if their symptoms subside.
