Description:In response to a request from the management at the Barr Rubber Corporation (SIC-3069), Sandusky, Ohio, a study was made of five employees who developed methemoglobinemia while working at the facility. Their specific job included manually placing adhesive coated metal parts into rubber molds without using gloves. They experienced yellow hands, cyanosis of the lips and nailbeds, headache, dizziness, nausea, chest pain, confusion and difficulty in concentration. Chemical analysis of the most recent shipment of the adhesive Thixon-511-T identified the potent methemoglobin precursor, dinitrobenzene, (25154545) at 1 percent by weight. This adhesive had been used at the company for several years without incident. After the company switched to a replacement adhesive, Thixon-521, a follow-up study was performed to check workers for signs of cyanosis or other pertinent adverse health effects. Methemoglobin levels were within normal limits as were hemoglobin and carboxyhemoglobin values. The authors conclude that a health hazard existed due to dermal exposure to an adhesive containing dinitrobenzene. The authors recommend the following: instituting a continuing education program be conducted to ensure that employees are aware of hazards
obtaining current Material Safety Data Sheets
the use of protective clothing
avoidance of skin contact
periodic medical monitoring
and reassignment of employees with preexisting chronic anemia or known hemoglobinopathies.
