Description:In response to a request from Local 816, Allied Industrial Workers Union, exposures to welding fumes, paint, and asbestos (1332214) among workers at the Four Wheel Drive/Seagrave manufacturing facility (SIC-3711) in Clintonville, Wisconsin, were evaluated. Workers had complained of respiratory and other health problems. Total airborne welding fume concentrations as determined from breathing zone samples collected near 33 welders ranged from 0.001 to 0.022mg/m3. Silver (7440224) was detected in only one sample at a concentration of 0.015mg/m3. Airborne asbestos concentrations were below the limit of detection. Analysis of the bulk samples of brake shoe shavings showed that they contained 10 to 20 percent chrysotile (12001295) asbestos. In questionnaires administered to welders and nonwelders, a higher number of irritations of the upper and lower respiratory tract, eyes, and throat were reported in welders. The authors conclude that there is a health hazard from exposure to welding fume, and that a potential for exposure to asbestos exists in the brake shoe machining area. The authors recommend improvements in ventilation, use of respiratory protective equipment, and engineering controls.
