Description:In response to a request from the United Rubber, Cork, Linoleum, and Plastic Workers of America, International Union, an evaluation was made of exposures to chemicals during phthalate production at Badische Corporation (SIC-2869), Kearny, New Jersey. Production of phthalic-acid (100210) and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (117817) (DEHP) began at this site in 1971. Only one of three full shift samples collected from operators was above the analytical limit of detection. Airborne levels of DEHP were below existing standards; however, as these standards were not based on the carcinogenicity of this chemical, efforts should be made to lower even the concentrations which were found. No abnormal liver function test results were obtained among the 48 individuals deemed to be at special risk due to their specific tasks. Small but statistically significant increases were noted in total urinary phthalate concentrations over the shift in higher exposure workers. No changes were noted in gastrointestinal, constitutional, or nervous system examinations as a result of exposure. The authors conclude that there were exposures to the suspected carcinogen DEHP, but no health effects attributable to this exposure were observed. The authors recommend that the practice of preemployment physicals and period history and laboratory evaluations be continued. Efforts should be made to keep exposures as low as possible.
