Description:In response to a request from employees of Chemical Leaman Tank Lines, Inc. (SIC-2952), Stockertown, Pennsylvania, a study was made of possible hazardous exposures to substances during the loading and unloading of coal-tar-pitch (65996932) at the Cooper's Creek Chemical site in Conshohocken. The company distills coal tar for the manufacture of roof coating products. During the loading operation a feeder line is connected into the dome opening of the storage tank, and the feeder pump activated. The driver wears chemical goggles and butyl rubber gloves. During unloading operations the driver connects the hose to the truck tank bottom flange and to a pump at the site. The driver must go up on top of his truck to observe when the tank is finally emptied. Drivers wear insulated gloves and chemical goggles. Loading and unloading each require about 3 to 5 minutes. Breathing zone samples revealed no polynuclear aromatics in the breathing zone of the driver. During the loading operation, only very small concentrations of phenanthrene (85018) (0.006 milligrams per cubic meter) and anthracene (120127) (0.003 milligrams per cubic meter) were detected in the driver's breathing zone. The author concludes that no health hazard exists during loading and unloading operations at this site. The author recommends that impervious thermal gloves, shoes and chemical goggles or a face shield be worn when handling hot liquid coal tar pitch and that protective clothing and equipment be removed only in a change room.
