Description:In response to a request from the superintendent of the National Park Service (SIC-7999), located in Chillicothe, Ohio, an evaluation was made of possible asbestos (1332214) present in the ceiling plaster and tap water at the visitor center at the Mound City Group National Monument. Six area air samples were collected in the museum for 8 hours. Four bulk samples of ceiling plaster were taken along with 10 gallons of tap water. Three of the four bulk samples contained 2 to 60 percent chrysotile (12001295) asbestos. Asbestos concentrations in the air ranged from 0.01 to 0.02 fibers/cubic centimeter (f/cc). Some filament type particles were found in the tap water, but no mineral fibers of any type. The authors conclude that a health hazard did not exist at the time of the survey. The author recommends that the staff continue routine maintenance of the facility to monitor the condition of the ceiling plaster for peeling or other faulty conditions. Another coat of paint was recommended to aid in preventing asbestos from becoming airborne. Should the decision be made at some future time to remove the plaster which contains asbestos, a contractor familiar with the removal of asbestos containing products should be used.
