Description:In response to a request from a worker at the Western Hills Post Office (SIC-4311), Cincinnati, Ohio, an evaluation was made of possible hazardous working conditions. The concern was generated by four cases of lymphoma occurring in this work force over the preceding 2 year period. A review was made of the medical records for the four alleged cases of lymphoma. Only two were confirmed lymphoma cases
one was adenocarcinoma of the rectum and one squamous cell carcinoma of the mouth. Particulate air samples were collected at the post office and tested for 32 metals. The following were identified: calcium (7440702), less than 1.0 to 1.3 micrograms/cubic meter (microg/m3)
iron (7439896), less than 1.0 to 19.3microg/m3
and sodium (7440235), less than 1.0 to 2.3microg/m3. Air concentrations for toluene (108883) ranged from 0.13 to 0.26 parts per million (ppm) and for xylene (1330207), 0.01 to 0.05ppm. Bulk samples taken of the ceiling material contained no asbestos. The authors conclude that the finding of two cases of lymphoma in this work force during that period of time was probably due to chance. No hazardous working conditions were found in this inspection.
