Description:In response to a request from the Union City Body Company (SIC- 3713), located in Union City, Indiana, an evaluation was made of employee complaints of headaches, high blood pressure and nosebleeds. This facility manufactures truck bodies for delivery vehicles. An anticorrosive weldable sealer, Anchor Tuflex 23, used at this facility was a metallo/organic complex with 42 percent aliphatic solvents and less than 1 percent aromatic solvents. It contained 56 percent nonvolatiles (not identified). Tuflex was applied by spray gun or brush as an anticorrosive weldable sealer. There was general exposure to a solvent containing 1,1,1- trichloroethane (71556), which can be absorbed through the skin. In both welding areas the fume samples were quite low, and not expected to induce adverse health effects. One worker did experience some difficulties which may have resulted from exposure to copper (7440508) fumes. Solvent and alkane levels in Tuflex were well below environmental criteria. No appreciable problems were noted in the primer drying oven areas. The authors conclude that some workers had experienced occasional irritative effects from welding operations, but no other definite health hazards were found. The authors recommend avoiding solvent contact with the skin, and installing local exhaust ventilation at the point of contamination generation which would help minimize irritative symptoms.
