  This letter informs the recipient of the results of air sampling carried out to detect asbestos (1332214) fibers in the J.F.K. Federal Building located in Boston, Massachusetts. The sampling was performed using 37-millimeter diameter membrane filters of 0.8-micron pore size which were mounted in three-piece cassettes. An airflow of 2 liters per minute was maintained through open face filters using personal sampling pumps. Phase contrast microscopes at 400x magnification were used to make the determinations. Twelve different rooms in all were sampled and the locations included desktops, file cabinets, tables and credenza. At no location was there a fiber concentration over 0.01 fiber/cubic centimeter. Bulk samples were taken from structural steel supports in the building for analysis as well. Samples were taken from five rooms
  
  the amount of asbestos determined in the samples ranged from 15 to 20 percent. It had been thought that asbestos was used during the construction of the building only as high as the fourteenth floor, but this study demonstrated that asbestos was used throughout the entire building.
