Description:In response to a request to investigate the possible harmful effects arising from solvent vapors entering one workplace from another business using the solvents on a lower floor, the working conditions at the Draper Pet Supply Company, Springfield, Massachusetts, were evaluated. The pet supply warehouse and aquariums were located on the second floor of a brick and masonry building. There were seven workers in the pet supply warehouse and office areas. The first floor contained a manufacturing firm which used n-propyl-alcohol (71238) and ethyl-acetate (141786). Vapors from the first floor were exhausted directly to the outside on two sides of the building with the exhaust vents located about 5 feet above ground level. Air samples were collected from nine areas in the pet supply company on 12 and 13 December, 1973. The author concludes that no health hazard existed from solvent vapors at the time of the survey. During warmer weather when the windows were either open or air conditioning units drew outside air into the building, there may have been a hazardous condition.
