Description:In response to a request from an authorized employee representative at the Shell Chemical Company (SIC-2879), located in Denver, Colorado, an evaluation was made of possible employee exposure to dibromochloropropane (96128), chloroform (67663), trimethyl- phosphite (121459), Vapona (62737), trimethyl-phosphate (512561), acetone (67641), sodium-hydroxide (1310732), hexane (110543), methyl- isobutyl-ketone (108101), methyl-isocyanate (624839), methylthioacetoldoxime (MSAO), Nudrin (16752775), and Azodrin (6923224). Approximately 175 workers were engaged in the manufacture or formulation of pesticide products. The authors conclude that workers were not being continuously overexposed to the chemicals evaluated. Some workers involved in Vapona, Nudrin, and Azodrin drum filling may have experienced skin absorption of these materials. No medically significant cholinesterase depressions were noted. The authors recommend that engineering controls be used to reduce the exposures even further. Other recommendations include the wearing of protective garments, observance of strict personal hygiene, good work practices, cleaning of all surfaces in the lunchroom at the end of each work shift, continuous refinement of the safety program at the facility, and a continuous review of maintenance procedures. A careful follow up should be carried out for any case of low cholinesterase values.
