Description:In response to a request from the Scott Paper Company and one employee, an evaluation of possible hazardous working conditions was undertaken at the Promotional Services Division of Scott Paper Company (SIC-7399), Chester, Pennsylvania. This Division was responsible for supplying advertising and promotional sales materials to the company and redeeming coupons sent by retailers and consumers. Promotional materials were packaged in polyolefin film using a hot wire sealing device. The employee who made the request was suffering from tiredness, confusion, virus colds with persistent cough, shortness of breath, low back pain, loss of appetite, nausea, intolerance of food, and weight loss. Measurements were taken of formaldehyde (50000), aldehydes, carbon-monoxide (630080), and particulate matter. Bulk samples of Clysar polyolefin plastic wrap yielded acetaldehyde (75070), alkenes and alkanes, methyl-isobutyl- ketone (108101), acetone (67641), and possibly crotonaldehyde (4170303), all at concentrations below 0.1 parts per million (ppm). The authors conclude that no occupational health hazard exists. The authors recommend that the heat sealing units using plastic wrap have local exhaust canopy hoods with a capture velocity of 100 feet/minute as close to the emission sources as possible.
