Description:In response to a request from a representative of the United Steel Workers of America, Local 1010, an evaluation was made of possible health hazards at the Inland Steel Company (SIC-3312), East Chicago, Indiana. This facility manufactures structural steel products. The request was prompted by the frequency of cancer deaths among employees who had worked on the electrical sequence of the 76-inch Hot Strip Rolling Mill. An analysis of the working day of three electrical sequence workers did not indicate any time at which the workers were involved in any way with a known or suspected carcinogen. Electrical machinery containing polychlorinated- biphenyls (1336363) was sealed and the employees were not routinely involved in the repair of this equipment. Medical data revealed the cause of death for 14 former employees to be cancer related in six cases: one myelogenous leukemia, one colon cancer, one multiple myeloma, and three unspecified. The authors conclude that no known or suspected carcinogenic exposure to workers was identified. A full mortality study was not conducted due to the small group size and other methodological problems. The authors recommend that this group of employees be monitored for specific causes of death and any chronic illnesses which might develop, and that if hazardous substances should become important in their future work schedules, they be made aware of the hazards and proper safety and health precautions be taken.
